American Spas and Hot Tubs Reviews

In short, American Spas hot tubs is parent manufacturer Cal Spas (LMS, Inc) answer to big box retailers wanting an entry to mid level hot tub for everyday consumers.  As of writing this article there are 15 models of various sizes and shapes ranging in price from $3500-$7000 and are available through big box retailers such as Home Depot, Walmart, Wayfair, Amazon, Lowe’s, and Overstock.com.  It’s important to note that these models are available only online even through retailers like Walmart, Home Depot, and Lowe’s who have physical stores because they are large items that are difficult to stock.

American Spas (Cal Spas) is not alone in their quest to capture business from these mass merchants. Many of the hot tub industry’s premium manufacturers are dipping their toes in the online and big box arena by creating specialty lines of hot tubs for the budget minded hot tub buyer.  Cal Spas is only one of many.  For example, Strong Spas of Pennsylvania builds a brand exclusively for the Costco called Evolution Spas and Watkins Manufacturing who owns premium brands like Hotspring Spas and Caldera Spas builds the AquaTerra Spas lineup for Costco too. In the past, we saw manufactures outside the hot tub industry try to take a bite out of big box retail such as Image Spas, Proform Spas, and Weslo Spas built by Icon Fitness.  Icon Fitness had a run for several years selling thousands of spas through Costco, Home Depot, and others and failed miserably due to customer returns, poor customer service, and inferior quality.  Maybe it was because Icon Fitness had little experience in the hot tub industry and didn’t quite grasp all of the nuances of the hot tub supply chain,  hot tub ownership, and warranty/customer service without a proper dealer network in place to handle it.  For now it seems the new crop of manufacturers supplying these big retailers have a handle on things and are managing to avoid the pitfalls of the past.

A few things remain that are important to consider when buying an American Spa hot tub or any of the aforementioned big box brands versus buying from an independent, local hot tub dealer;

  1. The brand is sold online so you aren’t able to look at the spa in person to have the peace of mind knowing that the fit, quality, and performance are what you would expect.
  2. It can be a hassle is you don’t like the hot tub for any reason because you will be responsible for returning it to the retailer or shipping it back if purchased online (in most cases at your expense)
  3. Limited shell, cabinet, and cover color selections available. Usually one shell color option and one or two cabinet options.
  4. Shorter warranty and no local dealer support.
  5. Limited Features and no customization options.
  6. Delivery is usually curbside which means you’ll have to get it to the backyard on your own.

  1. You note that the American Spas 745LW “Aqua” has 2 motors, but the specifications on Home Depot website show it has a single 6HP motor.
    Which is correct?

    1. Hi Mike. Thanks for your inquiry. The manufacturers do make changes to models from time to time so it appears that the 745LW is in fact a single pump unit (6hp brake horsepower and 3hp continuous) as confirmed on the HD website and American Spas website. Appreciate the feedback.

    1. Hi Martha. Thanks for your inquiry. You can place a hot tub on a deck as long as the deck can support the weight and if there is proper access to get to the service panel(s).

      We have a section in our buyer’s guide that addresses these concerns. Here’s the link – https://hottubinsider.com/guides/buyers-guide/preparation-for-a-hot-tub/

      You want to make sure that you have at least 24-36″ of clearance around the access panel so that a technician can get in there to remove the panel and work on the hot tub should the need arise. Hope this answers your question.

  2. We had the same issue. Nowhere in the manual does it show this. But after my electrician took off every panel we realized it was under where the control panel is
